How do we perceive the environmental aspects of wooden homes?
04. 11. 2024
These days, there is increasing pressure on the environmental aspect of housing. In the past two years, inflation has caused a significant increase in energy prices. People are looking for homes that minimise operating costs and demand long-lasting and sustainable building materials.
But it's not just about money. Eco-friendly buildings should also take into account materials that contribute to a healthier life.
Are you dreaming of building an eco-friendly home? In today's article, we'll present how we at MODULOS work on the individual steps to create ecological housing that will appeal to even the most demanding of clients.
Wood – a natural material with a minimal ecological footprint
Wood is an exceptionally versatile material. We can say that it's renewable since it comes from forests that can be replanted. Compared to other building materials, it has a low carbon footprint – what does that mean? Wood absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows. Its production emits fewer greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than, for example, concrete or steel production.
At the end of its lifespan, wood can be recycled or used as a biodegradable material. In this way, we at MODULOS minimise waste and increase the sustainability of our wooden homes.
Wood also has great insulating properties including sound insulation! Wooden homes require much less energy for heating and cooling, thus reducing their overall ecological footprint.
At MODULOS, we always strive to get the most out of a material. In production, we work to use wood ideally without leftover waste or scraps.
Our ecological production of wooden buildings
Striving for a waste-free production process is just one way of looking at the ecology of our production. Every year we innovate our manufacturing process further, and while we're moving forward with technology, we put considerable effort in minimising emissions and our environmental impact.
Our wooden buildings are largely manufactured in our shop, where we don't use any heavy machinery. This alone reduces our environmental impact. Through efficient production, we reduce production costs, which in turn leads to lower prices for our customers. Our wooden homes are much more affordable than conventional brick buildings or wooden structures built on site.
Let's also take a look at heating systems. We offer our customers effective solutions to minimise operating costs and save on energy bills. In our wooden homes, we most often install air-to-air heat pumps. This solution saves the most on costs. We also prepare roofs for the installation of solar panels, which will further increase the energy independence of the home.
Eco-friendly installation of homes on ground screws
However, it doesn't end with the home itself. It's also necessary to take into account the land where the wooden home is to be placed. We respect the environment as a whole. We know how home foundations can often cause irreversible damage to the ground, which is why we install many of our wooden buildings on ground screws to minimise the impact on the soil and natural environment when the home is installed.
What makes ground screws so special?
Placing wooden buildings on ground screws eliminates the need for traditional foundation structures such as concrete ones. The ground screws are installed using special equipment that does not require deep trenches or large construction machinery. They will not degrade the land and will preserve the earth texture for plants and animals in the area.
However, ground screws have many more great properties. They only take a few hours to install and you can immediately place the home on them. They are more cost-effective than traditional foundation methods and allow for easier relocation or reconstruction of the building in the future.
A comprehensive eco-friendly approach to wooden buildings
Every detail matters. There are many other technologies and design features that can be integrated into wooden buildings to maximise their sustainability and environmental benefits.
One of the most common accessories are the aforementioned solar panels. They allow for the use of renewable energy from the sun to generate electricity that can cover most of a household's electricity needs during the summer months.
Another eco-friendly feature can be, for example, a water purifier that can recycle and reuse rainwater or wastewater. We also install a moisture monitor in our wooden homes to protect the structures from large water leaks. This smart device will alert you to a leak with an audible signal, as well as send information to your phone when you're not at home.
Have you ever heard of green roofs? These roofs are covered with plants that not only provide an aesthetic and natural look to the home, but also have a number of environmental benefits. They reduce heat gains and losses and improve the insulation properties of the home. They absorb rainwater and thus help against overloading of local drains.
It's everyone's duty to strive for healthy, eco-friendly living
At MODULOS, we're constantly striving to push ecological boundaries. Our innovative manufacturing approaches help us to minimise negative environmental impacts and create a healthy and sustainable home for our clients.
